PollyGlot

AI translation and conversation app.

PollyGlot ChatterBox showing a multi-turn translated conversation

Overview

A Next.js application with secure server-side API routes, a limited free tier, user-key fallback, and persistent multi-turn conversations.

Next.jsTypeScriptTailwind CSSAnthropic Claude API

01

Translation without the friction

PollyGlot combines direct translation and conversational follow-up in one interface. Users can choose a target language, translate their message, and continue the exchange through ChatterBox without losing context.

02

Designed around responsible API access

Anthropic requests are handled through a server-side route so the application key is never exposed in the browser. Each user receives a limited app-funded free tier, with the option to provide their own API key afterward.

03

Conversations that persist

ChatterBox supports multi-turn conversations, while local storage preserves useful preferences and conversation history between visits.

Engineering trade-off

Challenge

Making the AI demo publicly accessible required balancing a useful trial experience with API-key security and operating costs.

Decision

Anthropic requests pass through a server-side endpoint. For this portfolio-scale demo, browser storage tracks a 10-request allowance before offering a bring-your-own-key option.

Production path

Because browser-managed usage data can be reset, a production version would enforce quotas through authenticated user records, persistent server-side storage, and request-rate controls.
